What is Reiki?

Reiki was developed in the early 1900s by Mikao Usui in Japan. It draws on elements of ancient Japanese spiritual practices, as well as Chinese and Indian philosophy. Usui created Reiki as a system of natural healing based on universal life energy, intended to support balance and wellbeing on physical, mental, and emotional levels.
A simple understanding of how Reiki works is this:
Working with the five elements of the Reiki system helps to stimulate the flow of energy (Ki) in the body. While energy is already present within you, it often struggles to flow freely due to blockages; this waste is clogging you up, obstructing its flow. When our energy flows uninterrupted, we shine freely with the pure light of our true selves. This state is often referred to as enlightenment.
One of the most beautiful aspects of Reiki is that we don’t control or manipulate the energy. Instead, it’s about being open, letting go, and allowing your body to draw on the energy it needs.
In a Reiki treatment the practitioner places their hands either on or just above the receiver’s body, allowing the energy to flow to areas that need rebalancing. Reiki can be used for self-healing or to treat others, whether in person or remotely, over a distance. Learn more about distance Reiki.
Reiki helps to shift energy within the body, and you may feel this process as it unfolds. As energy is cleared, it’s possible to experience temporary discomfort, such as a headache, digestive upset, or emotional upheaval. This is part of the cleansing process, a natural response as the body rebalances and returns to its pure state.
