Joshin Kokyu Ho: The Focused Breath Method

In the world of Reiki, Joshin Kokyu Ho is a profound meditation technique that strengthens one’s connection to energy and presence. As one of the five pillars of Gendai Reiki-ho, it serves as both a foundational method for developing a deeper Reiki practice and a transformative tool for enhancing overall wellness.

Joshin Kokyu Ho helps regulate the breath, calm the nervous system, and cultivate inner stillness. As the breath slows and softens, the mind becomes quieter and the body more receptive. This creates the ideal inner landscape for Reiki energy to flow freely. How to practice Reiki Meditation

The Energetic Foundations of Reiki Practice

What energetic system do the principles of Reiki draw from? Reiki, a Japanese practice developed in the early 1900s, is rooted in the same energetic concepts found in many Japanese martial arts and Ki practices formalised during that time — including karate, judo, and aikido. At the center of these traditions lies the concept of the hara or tanden, understood as the energetic powerhouse of the body.

The word hara refers to the stomach, abdomen, or belly. In Japanese energetic tradition, this lower abdominal region is where energy is stored, cultivated, and radiated throughout the body. Mikao Usui’s original teachings emphasise the importance of building and maintaining energy in the hara, as it stabilises both mind and body.

In addition to the hara, the Japanese energetic system recognises two other key centres:

  • the head

  • the heart

Together with the hara, these form the Three Diamonds. Connecting these three centers helps practitioners cultivate unity, balance, and alignment.

However, the most essential energy center to develop first is the lower hara, as it serves as the body’s central axis. Reconnecting with the Original Energy through this area supports good health, boosts resilience, and aids in recovery from illness. It becomes a reliable internal anchor — a source of strength whenever needed.

Why Joshin Kokyu Ho Is Central to Reiki Meditation

Joshin Kokyu Ho is an important meditation exercise practiced at every level of the Reiki system. Its primary focus is the hara, helping practitioners deepen their energetic foundation and reconnect with their own inner stability.

This focused breathing method plays a significant role in:

  • reducing stress and nervous system overload

  • supporting emotional healing

  • improving mental clarity and calm

  • enhancing energetic flow through the body

Through slow, intentional breathing, the body enters a state of calm, the mind becomes more spacious, and the energetic system becomes more receptive to healing.

What We Practice Together in a Reiki Meditation Session

In our Reiki Meditation sessions, we practice Joshin Kokyu Ho (focused breath meditation) combined with Reiki self-treatment (hands-on healing). I guide you step by step through the breathing method, hand positions, and self-healing sequences, ensuring that each part of the practice feels accessible and comfortable.

Every session offers a calm, nurturing environment where you can explore grounding techniques, reconnect with your breath, and experience the supportive flow of Reiki through your own hands. The emphasis is on presence, gentleness, and learning to work with your energy in a natural and intuitive way.

Whether you’re seeking clarity, emotional balance, inner peace, or simply a moment of restorative stillness, Reiki Meditation supports your wellbeing on multiple levels. Book Your Reiki Meditation Session

Guided Meditation as the Foundation of Every Reiki Treatment

My Reiki treatments always begin with a guided meditation rooted in traditional Japanese practice, focusing on the hara. This gentle introduction helps you relax, center yourself, and arrive fully in the moment before receiving hands-on Reiki treatment.

Beginning with breathwork and grounding techniques prepares the body and mind to receive Reiki more deeply. Clients often describe this part of the session as comforting, peaceful, and stabilising — an essential doorway into the healing process.

By connecting with the hara and activating your internal center, the meditation creates the ideal foundation for Reiki energy to flow freely. This enhances the effectiveness of the session and allows healing to unfold naturally. Reiki Energy Healing Benefits
