The Patterns We Carry: An Invitation to Self-Reflection

4 min read

We all develop patterns.

Ways of thinking, reacting and moving through life that become so familiar, we may no longer notice them.

Perhaps you know the feeling. Someone says something, and before you have really had time to think about it, you feel yourself reacting. A familiar irritation, a need to explain yourself, or the feeling that you have somehow been misunderstood.

Later, you might wonder why such a small moment affected you so much.

Or you find yourself agreeing to something you didn't really want to do. Not because anyone insisted, but because saying yes felt easier than explaining why you'd rather not.

Sometimes we recognise these reactions immediately. Other times, we only notice them afterwards.

And sometimes, we don't notice them at all.

How Our Patterns Become Familiar

Not all patterns are difficult or unhelpful. Many are simply part of how we navigate everyday life. They give us a sense of familiarity, help us make decisions and allow us to move through our days without having to think about every little thing.

Others may have developed through experiences that taught us to be careful, to protect ourselves, to please others or to expect certain outcomes.

Over time, these ways of responding can become so familiar that we stop questioning them.

We might think, That's just how I am.

And in some ways, it probably is.

But it can be interesting to consider how much of what we call our personality is also made up of familiar responses, expectations and stories we have carried with us for years.

Not because there is something wrong with them.

Sometimes, self-reflection simply means looking at the patterns we carry in a way we haven't before.

When We Begin to Notice

There can be something surprising about recognising a familiar pattern while it is happening.

We might notice ourselves becoming defensive in a conversation. Or realise that we've been trying to meet an expectation nobody actually placed on us.

For a moment, we see the reaction rather than simply being carried along by it.

That doesn't necessarily mean the feeling disappears.

We may still be irritated, uncomfortable or unsure of ourselves. We may even respond exactly as we always have.

But something has shifted, however slightly.

We have noticed.

And that moment of awareness may give us a little space to be curious about what is happening, rather than immediately trying to change it.

A Mirror for Everyday Life

My Reiki self-practice includes meditation and the Five Precepts, which are part of the traditional Japanese system of Reiki. In their simplicity, the Precepts offer me a way to reflect on my own experiences and the familiar patterns of everyday life.

For today only:

  • Do not anger

  • Do not worry

  • Be grateful

  • Be true to your way

  • Be compassionate to yourself and others

At first glance, they seem almost self-evident.

And yet, living by such simple principles is not always quite so simple.

For me, they are not rules to follow perfectly, but an invitation to look a little more closely at my own experiences.

For Today Only

There is something gentle about the opening words of the Five Reiki Precepts.

For today only.

We don't have to imagine a future in which we've overcome every difficult habit or learnt to respond perfectly to everything life brings.

There will still be moments when we lose patience, misunderstand someone or find ourselves doing exactly what we've always done.

Sometimes we'll recognise it straight away. Sometimes much later.

And perhaps that's part of what makes those three words so meaningful.

They bring our attention back to the life we're living today, rather than the person we think we ought to become.

Creating Space for Something Different

We often approach personal growth with the idea that something about us needs fixing.

We want to become less reactive, let go of old habits, be more patient or finally stop doing something we've been doing for years.

And while wanting things to change is understandable, the effort to become different can sometimes turn into another expectation we place upon ourselves.

Another thing to get right.

What if we didn't have to begin there?

Some patterns have been with us for a very long time. They may have helped us through situations we barely remember now. Others still serve us well.

And some might simply be worth looking at again.

Not necessarily to change them, but to understand why they feel so familiar.

We might still choose the same response, even when we recognise it.

Or, occasionally, something different may become possible.

Not because we've finally become someone else.

But because we've begun to see something familiar in a different way.

A Space to Simply Be

Sometimes, you don’t need to do more. You simply need space.

Space to pause, to notice what is here, and to reconnect with yourself.

This is the space we hold at Healing.Barcelona.
